Senior Military Official: US Drone Downed 7 Kilometers into Iranian Territories

Tue Jun 25, 2019

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of the Military Geography Department of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Amir Fakhri reiterated on Tuesday that the US spy drone which was shot down by Iranian Air Defense units on Thursday was flying 7 kilometers deep into territorial waters of the country, and crashed into Iran's territorial waters after being targeted by a missile.

“The coordinates of the crashed drone were specified by our marine units, and assuredly it was into the territorial waters of Iran as it was flying 7 kilometers deep into the skies over our waters,” Brigadier General Fakhri said today, on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark the international Day of Hydrography in Tehran.

He added that the coordinates released showing the position of the downed US drone in Iran’s airspace is different from the coordinates on the water as in the air it was even more inside Iranian airspace and after falling it was 7 kilometers or 4 miles inside territorial waters.

“The only country in the world which is disrespectful to territorial waters of other countries is the US,” he said, adding that everybody “honors sovereignty of other countries but the US’ imperialistic conduct has made it disrespectful to other countries’ territories”.

Saying that the borders for the country’s airspace and territorial waters are the same, Fakhri recounted that these borders are set 12 miles off the countries’ coastlines, and calculated by the Military Geography Department of Armed Forces.

The area between the coastline and the border that is 12 miles into waters is considered as the territories of the country, he said, adding, “The fall of the [US] drone into our waters shows that it was intruding into our territorial waters.”

“The US [military] in our region is not solely dependent on this [type of] drone for reconnaissance and it has diverse spy aircrafts which are all monitored and tracked round the clock by the comprehensive air defense system of our country which condones no small move of them,” the commander reassured.

On Thursday, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force announced it used the Iran-made short-range and mid-altitude 'Third of Khordad' missile defense shield to bring down the US spy drone over the country's Southern coasts. The incident marked the first direct Iranian attack on US assets and came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The United States has confirmed that one of its reconnaissance drones was shot down by Iraniain air defenses, but denied that it intruded into Tehran’s airspace at the time.

Iran, but, announced that the country has retrieved parts of the US Global Hawk from the country's territorial waters, rejecting Washington's claim that the aircraft was targeted in international waters. The Islamic Republic also stated it will complain to the UN Security Council as the United States has violated its airspace and claimed that its drone was in international airspace when it was shot down by Iran.

Speaking at a briefing for journalists in Jerusalem, Patrushev added that evidence presented by the United States alleging Iran was behind attacks on ships in the Gulf of Oman was poor quality and unprofessional.

Washington has recently claimed that Tehran is responsible for the attacks on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, without providing any reliable proof. In responce, Iran stated that Washington’s allegation is unsurprising, warning that the United States has resorted to “Plan B” to sabotage the Islamic Republic’s diplomatic efforts.

“I warned of exactly this scenario a few months ago, not because I’m clairvoyant, but because I recognize where the B Team is coming from,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif noted, warning that President Donald Trump’s “B Team” was now moving to “Plan B: Sabotage diplomacy” in an attempt to “cover up its economic terrorism” against Iran.

The B-Team is a reference to hawkish US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Also on Tuesday, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev stated that Moscow has information that the US spy drone was shot down in Iranian airspace thus confirming the information earlier provided by Tehran.

Russia has military intelligence that shows that the American drone was in Iranian air space when it was shot down by Iran last week, Patrushev said today.
