TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf urged global backup for the oppressed Palestinian nation, saying that the Muslim world’s support for Palestine will stop the Israeli regime from continuing savage crimes against Palestinians.

“Islamic world’s support for inalienable rights of the Palestinian nation will prevent continuation of Zionist regime’s atrocities and crimes against Palestinians,” Qalibaf said in his meeting with Tunisian Member of Parliament Noureddine Bhiri on the sidelines of the 4th Extraordinary Meeting of Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Standing Committee on Palestine in Tehran on Monday.

Bhiri, for his turn, lauded the initiative taken by the Iranian parliament in holding the 4th Extraordinary Meeting of PUIC Member States (PUIC) Standing Committee on Palestine and stated that people of Tunisia, like the noble Iranian nation, is sensitive to the issue of Palestine and emphasizes on the formation of a Palestinian government with the capital of holy Al-Quds.

In relevant remarks in mid-May, Qalibaf strongly condemned the cruel Israeli crimes against Palestinians, and said that the Islamic Ummah is standing by the Palestinian nation to punish Zionist aggressors for their crimes.

“The heart of Islam beats for Palestine. The Islamic Ummah and Resistance have stood by the Palestinian cause with strength and confidence so as to punish Zionists for their actions,” Qalibaf said on Sunday May 16 at the open session of the parliament, adding, “We strongly condemn the brutal crimes of the Zionist regime.”

"We welcome the resistance of all parties in Palestine and support any move to stop the Zionist regime's crime," he went on to say.

“Failed plans such as the deal of the century and compromising of some Arab leaders will lead nowhere,” Qalibaf stressed.

The Israeli military launched a bloody military onslaught against the Gaza Strip on May 10, razing many homes and civilian buildings to the ground in the already-besieged Palestinian territory.

Meanwhile, Palestinian sources reported that the death toll from Israel’s ongoing aggression against the besieged Gaza Strip has risen to at least 248 Palestinians, including tens of children and women.

The report by the Palestinian Health Ministry noted that Israel’s military aggression, which lasted for 11 days, has also wounded over 1,900 civilians, dozens of them seriously.

Meantime, retaliatory rocket attacks by Hamas and Islamic Jihad against Israeli targets came in response to Israel’s relentless airstrikes on the densely-populated enclave.

On May 16, Israeli sources said that Gaza-based Palestinian resistance groups had fired around 4,000 rockets toward the occupied territories over the previous several days, surpassing the pace seen during an escalation in 2019 and the 2006 war with Lebanon's Hezbollah resistance group.

Israel had to accept self-declared ceasefire on Friday May 21.
